Getting fit at home: GROOV3 “Living Room Sessions”

I’ve been promising for a while now to start a “Body after Baby” series, and I’m happy to announce that series is still in the works! Look for “Body after Baby” next month. This series will feature a great line up of mom guest posters, including a Zumba instructor and a professional body builder.

But what if you don’t have the time or money to be a “gym rat?” Well, one of the things the Army taught me is that you can be in shape and get a great workout without using anything other than your body. If you’re not sure where to start, a free online fitness video may help. Since you’re reading this post, I’m going to assume you have Internet and can log onto YouTube! I’ve come across a few fitness videos and programs online that I like, but the most recent is GROOV3.

Benjamin Allen, dancer and celebrity choreographer, founded the cardio-dance workout GROOV3 with the idea that dance should be fun and for everyone, of all ages and abilities. Allen has now brought his classes right into everyone’s home. His “Living Room Sessions” are free and available for viewing on YouTube.

I’ve done several of Allen’s sessions now, and I’m really enjoying them. Even my mother-in-law got into it while visiting! The sessions start off slow, while Allen shows you the steps. As the session progresses, the intensity increases, and you put everything together. I always break a sweat by the end. Are you coordinated? I’m not! I’m the epitome of the white girl dancing stereotype. Some of the moves I was able to get after a few tries, but there are others I’ll have to work on. But I didn’t feel like any of the steps were so difficult that I’ll never get them.

You can subscribe to Living Room Sessions on the GROOV3 YouTube channel. There are currently six sessions ranging from about 12 minutes to 24. If you’re not sure about diving right in, Allen does have some basic tutorials.

If you check out Living Room Sessions, I’d love to hear what you think! What workouts do you do at home?

  1. Wow, I’ve lost 2 pounds after just doing this for a week! I LOVE to dance but because I have children now I am not able to go to a dance studio often and I have to stay at home, boo! So thanks 🙂

  2. Love the steps! Thanks Elisebet! The music is pretty cool too. Will be doing this if I can’t go to the gym or the weather prohibits.
