Review: Indestructibles- books built for the way babies read

I purchased two “Indestructibles” a few weeks ago for my baby boy. Invented by a mother of triplets, these books are “built for the way babies read,” with three specific claims: they are waterproof, tear resistant, and baby durable.

I was curious to see if the books lived up to the hype, and they did! My son can crumple them, toss them, and gum them without destroying the books at all!

Here are the books about a week and a half after regular use by my 6-month old. I smoothed them out a bit by hand, but you can still see they’re slightly crumpled but intact.

I tried to tear the page but wasn’t able to.

I tried tearing the page right above the “Nontoxic” print.

I also tried wetting one of the books under the faucet. The water just bounced off the page and never soaked through. I checked back about 30 minutes later, and the page was completely dry.

Here’s an action shot!

Can’t be destroyed by my baby!

My son loves playing with his books. The pages and artwork are bright and colorful. They capture his attention, and eventually he’ll figure out how to turn the pages on purpose. =D

Review: All-in-Two Diaper by AsherLiz Designs

Stefanie is the designer and seamstress behind AsherLiz Designs, a WAHM (working-at-home mom) cloth diaper line.

“Hi, I’m Stefanie! I started CDing with my youngest and quickly became addicted! One of the reasons I decided to go with CDs was to save a little money. So naturally, that lead to me making the diapers myself. Soon after, AsherLiz Designs became a reality! The name is inspired by my kids, and everything I offer in my store, I use with my kids too.”

Stefanie sent me an adorable all-in-two (AI2) diaper to review! An AI2 diaper consists of two parts: a waterproof outer part that can be used more than once and an inner absorbent part (soaker) that is be replaced as it becomes wet or soiled.

The outer layer of this diaper is made with a cotton knit fabric overtop a hidden waterproof PUL layer.

AI2

This AI2 is a one-size diaper, meaning it can fit most babies from 10 lbs. to 35+ lbs. The diaper size is adjusted by the rows of snaps along the waist and rise.

Largest setting

The inside of this diaper is made with cuddle dry microfleece.

This diaper comes with a size-adjustable soaker that snaps into the diaper. The soaker is made of 1 layer of cotton velour and 1 layer of heavy organic bamboo fleece sewn together.

The soaker has two snaps to adjust the size. By folding the top of the soaker down and using the lower snap, the soaker better fits smaller babies.

Here’s a shot of the diaper in action:

Sorry about the blurry photo; my model is mobile and extremely squirmy!

Our experiences with the diaper:

About 2 hours after I first put this diaper on my son, I checked for wetness. The soaker was damp on the bottom half, so I went ahead and changed it. The diaper cover part itself felt dry. This time, I used a medium-size Diaper Rite prefold folded under and placed inside as a doubler. Since the prefold was quite large, I undid all the rise snaps, and my son wore the diaper on the largest rise setting. After 2 more hours, I changed him again. The cover maybe, maybe felt a little damp, but I wasn’t quite sure. I went ahead and set it to the side until later in the day to let it air out. When I came back a few hours later and smelled it, there was no ammonia smell on the diaper. I used the outer part a third time. This time, I used it with a small-size prefold, which fit better as a doubler for my son. When I changed the diaper after this third use, I noticed the microfleece on the diaper part was starting to feel wet, so I went ahead and put it in the diaper pail to be washed.

I have nothing negative to say about this diaper! I was impressed with how well the microfleece repelled the moisture back into the soaker. The outer and inner layers are very soft and comfortable, as is the soaker. It does exactly what it should do and looks super cute doing so! The stitching is even and the diaper has an expensive feel and look to it.

I also want to mention we were able to get a very nice fit around the legs: no gaps, and no leakage.

Besides AI2s, Stefanie makes fitted diapers, pocket diapers, diaper covers, inserts and soakers, and cloth wipes. While browsing through the photos on the AsherLiz Facebook page, I noticed this line offers many prints I haven’t seen at other diaper shops, so you’re sure to find something you like! Visit AsherLiz Designs on Facebook.

Review: Hybrid Pocket Fitted Diaper by Poodelum & Missy Kate

I’ve never had a diaper quite like this one before. We have fitteds, and we have pockets, but this is the first diaper that is both!

“Located in beautiful Bend, Ore., ‘Poodelum & Missy Kate’ began on the far end of my enormous kitchen table with my sister’s borrowed sewing machine.

Just this last spring, I decided to make a change. Our youngest, now 9 months, was going through disposable diapers with lightning speed. I had always been curious about cloth diapering and decided to take the plunge. I already did a TON of laundry anyway, so why not?

My curiosity grew when I found out how many different kinds/types/brands there were. I asked all my mama friends to share any knowledge they had and began searching blogs for any insight mamas I didn’t even know wanted to share with the world.

I became obsessed. But not really obsessed to the point where I buy every different kind/brand out there. I became obsessed with figuring out how to make them myself.

I’ve always been ‘crafty.’ It’s in my nature. I’ve always loved sewing and creating. But now, absorbing a wealth of information from other know-how, crafty, do-it-yourself-genius mamas, I am striving to become an expert.”

I received a one-size hybrid pocket fitted to review.

The outside of this diaper is made of cotton interlock, and the inside is lined with french terry cloth. French terry cloth is not considered a stay-dry fabric, but that is normal for a fitted diaper.

Because this is a hybrid fitted, there’s a layer of fleece sewn in the middle to help the outer layer stay drier longer. However, this diaper does need a cover to be completely waterproof.

The pocket of this diaper is quite wide, so an insert can be used if desired for extra absorbency. I used it with a BumGenius insert, and it fit quite nicely.

Our Experiences with the Diaper:

Since this diaper doesn’t come with a closure, a Snappi or diaper pin should be used to close it. Because of this and the fold down rise, it’s easy to adjust this diaper to fit all sizes of babies. This can be a great thing for newborns, small babies, or skinny babies.

Because of the fabric used, I wasn’t sure how well a Snappi would hold it together, so I used a diaper pin. My son is really squirmy, so I did struggle getting the diaper fastened with the pin. However, I know many parents have become well-practiced at using pins and can do it quite quickly. Also, Kate mentioned to me that she has become adept at fastening a cover over this style of diaper without a Snappi, pin, or any type of closure.

If you’re not sure that a no closure diaper is for you, Kate does make them WITH closures.

With one microfiber insert inside, this diaper started to feel damp on my son after two hours, so I definitely recommend using this with a cover. An extra insert or doubler can also be used.

On its own, it’s a simple diaper without a lot of bells and whistles. But what it does have is the ability to be customized to fit many sizes of babies: from the very thin to the very chunky. It’s made well with even stitching and nice, wide elastic. It’s also very reasonably priced: without closure $13, with closure $14.
