Eyes are watching

Last night I attended midweek prayer meeting at our church. I don’t usually go on Wednesday nights, because it’s a little rough on Baby J. We didn’t get home until almost 9pm, and it was well after 10 by the time he slept. In spite of all that, I am glad that I went, because of the message I heard.

We were discussing the Apostle Peter and how he was “privileged,” as well as the dangers that come with a position of privilege. One of the dangers that stood out to me was the fact that people were watching him and looking to him. People are watching and looking to me, and they’re watching and looking to you.

Whether you’re a follower of Christ or not, the concept is the same, and I believe can be applied to everyone. No matter who you are and your station in life, someone is watching you. Someone sees how you handle difficulties, successes, and failures, whether that someone be a loved one, a neighbor, a co-worker, or even a stranger you meet on the street. Your kids and mine are definitely watching.

Just Eyes

My son can’t talk yet, but I know he already watches me. I can see him gauging my reaction when he does something he knows he’s not supposed to do (like touch the laptop). Do I respond in anger? Do I yell? Am I consistent?

As he grows older, I know the responsibility I have to be a consistent, positive role model grows in kind. How I talk about people behind closed doors, what I say when someone cuts me off while driving- these situations will rise often, and my son will be watching.

I know my actions and reactions are better when I’m rested. The more tired I am, the more short-tempered I am. I think that’s one of the reasons it’s important as a mother to take some time for myself. It’s not selfish. In the end, it’s actually helping my family. Sometimes, those dishes can wait, and so can those clothes. Taking a moment to inhale the aroma of my coffee and sipping it slowly can be good for everyone.

What are some ways you take a moment for yourself?

  1. This is beautifully written – and well timed for me 🙂
My moments are often in the morning while Itty Bitty is still asleep – I like to just look at her and rejoice in being a mother. I have found that just taking the time to say a prayer of thanks that I have been blessed with her makes the day so much brighter when we hit our rough spots!

  2. This is powerful! Good reminder for me! Glad you could make it to church that Wednesday.
It’s understandable when you can’t make it at times. But whenever you can, be there. It’s an opportunity to “grow in grace and in the knowledge of Him!”

  3. Yesterday was a day that I had to keep reminding myself of this. My husband and two kids have been sick for a week. Between the kids being up more often at night and my husband coughing at night, sleep hasn’t been happening for me, and it has taken everything in me not to just snap on my two year old. She is usually very sweet, but when she isn’t feeling well, it’s screaming, tears, tantrums, and little self-control. Usually, God reminds me when I need reminding that losing my self-control is no way to teach her how to maintain hers. Anyways, yesterday I was pretty much at the end of my rope with all the screaming and disobedience and crying, but my husband gracefully dealt with her, and I took my mommy time today and regrouped while I was running at the park. That is how I recharge- pray and run!
